macOS 10.13 High Sierra
November 2017

At first sight not a big change from Sierra, but developments include:
A new file system with more efficient and reliable storage,
High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) brings 4K video at lower file sizes.
Metal 2 powers virtual reality content creation and faster performance.
High Sierra also includes a number of refinements to Photos and Safari apps
macOS 10.12 Sierra
May 2017

On the surface it looks as though there have been few changes in upgrading from El Capitan to Sierra, but see what you think – here’s our quick summary of new features. It was introduced in the autumn of 2016.
1 Works on Macs from 2009 on
2 Brings Siri to Mac – already on iPhone/iPad
3 Picture in a picture – drag video to desktop
4 Folders first in finder – miles behind Windows
5 File system upgrade – includes syncing of Documents and Desktop to iCloud

The Hackintosh
February 2017

This is clearly not an Apple Mac, but the screen shows a very familiar Mac desktop.
The lowest cost Apple laptops are the 13 inch Macbook Air at £900 (under threat of being discontinued) and new MacBook Pro £1350. With the price of a new Mac getting ever higher, many enthusiasts have managed to install Mac OS (even Sierra) on non-Apple computers.
The big incentive is of course the lower cost of Windows hardware, but you do need an Apple computer to download the operating system.

New Macbook and it’s lighter than a Macbook Air
![]()
The heir to Air is now called a 12 inch Macbook and it has all the features rumoured below. There’s no doubt that it is a very svelt – very light and thin with a stunning high resolution ‘retina’ display. The base model costs £1049. However, the fact that it has only one new type of USB port for charging and everything else has caused a bit of a stir – most people don’t want to buy extra adaptors. Sadly, the Magsafe connector has gone too.
Existing 11 and 13 inch Macbook Airs have been updated to better specs, but look the same, so if you buy one you need to be aware whether it is a 2015 model.
See this amusing YouTube take-off of the new Macbook.

Rumoured New Macbook Air

There is currently plenty of speculation about a new Macbook Air with a 12 inch ‘retina’ display and narrow screen surround. Current models do not have a retina (high resolution) display. It also promises to be even thinner than the current models.
And more speculative still, there may only be two connection sockets – a new type of USB and an earphone output.
See this link.
